Beware Office 2010 Updates!

Microsoft Update offered me two suppsedly important updates for Office 2010 on Windows XP a couple of days ago, KB2863821 and KB4461522.
They installed fine, but the next day I came to use Word, and it would not run, with the error message -

Application popup: winword.exe - Entry Point Not Found : The procedure entry point GetDateFormatEx could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll.

This was followed by "The operating system is not presently configured to run this application".

I quickly found that no Office programs would now run, with the same error messages.
I removed the two updates, and all returned to normal.
I have no idea which of the updates caused the problem, and I haven't been offered either of them again so far, but if you are offered them, beware as they may well completely break your Office installation!

Rant about IT Security

$

i find computer "security" to be such a HILARIOUS topic...

i work for a cutting-edge hybrid-electric auto supplier and even the "engineers" and IT department are often "clueless" on computer 'security'...

and even more clueless when it comes to computer "speed and efficiency"...

i have two "primary" computers and four "secondary" computers...

one primary is running Windows Server 2003 x64, the other primary runs Win XP x64...

both primary PCs have 8GB RAM and multiple cores...

all four secondary PCs run Win XP x86...

all secondary PCs are 4GB RAM and single-core processors...

all SIX have BETWEEN FOURTEEN AND NINETEEN "processes" running after startup via Task Manager -> Processes...

all SIX have a full boot time (not exiting sleep or hibernation, but a full boot) of LESS THAN FORTY SECONDS (a couple even under TWENTY)...

(and that INCLUDES the THREE seconds for the BIOS to default to WinXP on my triple-boot laptop that also has seldom-used Win7 and Win10 LTSB...)

80% of our production PCs at work run WinXP...

BUT the d@mn IT Department (half a globe away, mind you!) is clueless about OS Optimization of any kind...

every d@mn one of our machines takes SIX TO EIGHT MINUTES for a full boot !!!

they all run from SIXTY EIGHT to UPWARDS OF NINETY "processes" !!!

Java Quick Start and Java Update processes on a PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT PC with NO access to outside world and NO Java-dependent applications ???

Microsoft Security Essentials and McAfee on a PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT PC with NO access to outside world ???

(don't get me started on the number of "processes" tied SOLELY to McAfee !!!)

i haven't ran any "anti-virus" products for DECADES (used to, until I "wised up")...

i don't even WASTE MY TIME with POSReady updates anymore on my beloved XP !!!

i do SLIPSTREAM some post-EOL patches and update/reinstall from slipstreamed media every 9-12 months or so...

i find it EXTREMELY exhilarating when a McAfee virus definition update FALSELY flags a PRODUCTION SOFTWARE .dll...

and PRODUCTION is grinded to a hault for HOURS...

exhilarating in an "i told you so" fashion...

i find it EXTREMELY exhilarating when an "engineer" says something like "it's slow because it's on Win XP"...

i reply "no, it's slow because you're running a 486 dx2 on a 66 MHz bus", which i say to 'exaggerate' to these "smart engineers"...

and only get a "deer in the headlights" expression returned so i have to add, "i run WinXP on an i7 at home and boot in THIRTY SECONDS"...

(yes, i do admit that the Epson Robot Controller software would add MAYBE ten more seconds to that...)

i find it EXTREMELY exhilarating when the COMPANY POLICY is (was!) to run Firefox...

and the ONLY time i've EVER been hit with a VIRUS was AT WORK while running Firefox and McAfee and behind the company "firewall"...

et cetera...

Python 3.5 Runtime Redistributable backported to XP

$

Hi folks!

Python (multi-platform programming language) officially dropped its support for Windows XP. Python programs are slightly different compared to other programs, because they are not compiled when you download them: they are just scripts. When you click on them, they will look for Python "assemblies" in order to quickly compile the program during the runtime. (It's not 100% true, but that's an over-simplyfied explanation). So... since Python dropped its support for XP, this meant a big issue for Python programs 'cause the old "assemblies" can't compile 3.5 scripts; that's why Python 3.5 Runtime Redistributable - Windows XP is here for you.

Please note that this is an unofficial Runtime Redistributable package. Extract it to "C" and rename it "Python35". The core and its dependencies have been compiled to run in Windows XP, but I have been able to test with a single program 'cause I don't have any other programs written for Python 3.5.

You'll find the official Python website screen and the backported version below.

Can Windows XP Pro x86 *Safely* TRIM an SSD?

$

Hi all,

I'm getting a new SSD soon and I intend to install Vista SP2 on it. Despite lack of official TRIM, I know various other people that have been going a long stretch with theirs on such setup using manual software that is made for the device to issue TRIM command.

As an experiment, I'd like to test Windows XP Professional x86. I have a good PAE patch that allows up to 64 gigs of memory, DX 10 mod, and an unofficial iso with a few desktop tweaks. (XP Ultimate By Johnny)

I do not want to jeopardize the health of this SSD at any cost, so I need some advice from those with experience on the matter. Aside TRIM. Is there anything within the filesystem of XP that can negatively impact a modern solid state hard drive? If this can be done, what must one do?

I have a 2 TB Seagate data spinner here, so I can easily put another OS on this. But the idea of a light weight NT 5 based system on an SSD does sort of infatuate me to try.

~Would appreciate any insight. Thanks

Change language of an updated XP

I installed my XP copy many years ago, in 2002.

Since then, I managed to move it from Hard Drive to Hard Drive, motherboard to motherboard, CPU to CPU and so on by just using a clone-disk utility.

Anyway, I moved to the UK in 2015 and I'd like to have my OS in English, 'cause it kinda feels weird and annoying to have it in Italian.

I mean, I already have everything in English (my mobile is in English, my TV is in English, my washing machine is in English, my microwave oven is in English, my Linux installation is in English, my Windows Server 2019 installation is in English) so why can't my XP be in English?

I've found somewhere on internet that I can modify a registry value and install the Service Pack 3, however I have an updated XP with all the POSReady updates; re-installing SP3 would overwrite the updated system files (and I don't want that).

Then, I came across the EgyMore Language Pack for Windows XP, but guess what? It doesn't have English!

I don't wanna make a fresh-new install of my Windows XP, so I ask you: what other options do I have?

Thank you in advance,

Frank.

How to Activate Windows XP Online in 2018

$
0
0

Since there's not much info out there on the web unless you spend a considerable amount of time googling, I thought i'd post the solution so more people can find it quickly.

Update: The latest problem with activation affects both XP and Vista however it’s relatively easy to fix, you need to update your root Certificates (The same issue causes problems browsing the net too)

I have created a Batch script that will download and update the Root Certificates accordingly but it will be a couple of days before I can post it.

Below is the Original Fix I posted

Turns out it's exceedingly easy to restore Windows XP Online Activation

  • Open the Start Menu
  • Right Click on Internet and choose "Internet Properties"
  • Goto the Advanced Tab
  • Scroll down near the bottom to the Security Section and uncheck both:
  • "Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
  • "Check for server certificate revocation"

Now you can activate online as normal or use the "Windows XP Product Key Change Tool"

I would reccomend re-enabling both options afterwards even if you dont use Internet Exploder (which you REALLY REALLY should not be)

If you’re still having problems:

I highly recommend downloading the “Windows XP Product Key Change Tool” it’s an official Microsoft tool and you should be able to download it from majorgeeks worked in every other instance for me where the built in one didn’t. (And in think it also lets you use different type of keys from the media the OS was installed from, such as Retail on OEM and such)

Also make sure your clock is set correctly (A common source of TLS problems)

Activate all processor cores at startup

I made a Windows XP clone from a mono-core computer to a quad-core computer (Intel Core 2 Quad q6600)
The 4 cores are displayed in the device manager.
But on the system boot screen in the boot.ini / SOS mode, it shows 1 single processor.
On the Internet there are many websites that say that to start with the 4 cores, you must enter the variant / numproc = 4 with msconfig, but my Windows XP only shows the number 1. Therefore, I entered the variant manually in boot.ini
When I restart Windows on / sos mode, it keeps saying that I only have 1 processor.
If I reinstall Windows, then it shows 4 processors but I lose several installed programs.
I want it to show 4 processors without reinstalling Windows.
msconfig / numproc = 4 does not work

[boot loader]
wait time = 30
default = multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (3) \ WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (3) \ WINDOWS = "Windows XP Pro" / fastdetect / noexecute = optin / sos / numproc = 4
multi (0) disk (0) rdisk (0) partition (2) \ WINNT = "Windows 2000 Pro" / pae / sos

Windows IPSec Firewall Rules

Lately I've been playing with Windows IPSec Firewall and I like it a lot. I try to avoid installing a bunch of unnecessary bloat. I gathered a bunch of rules from the internet and made it close to my iptables ruleset from Linux as possible. Seems to work pretty good except for a few caveats:

1. Can't get Kerberos to go in stealth mode

2. You have to manually add the ip range

3. Some rules have to be force from the cmd line or bat file.

Other than that, its my new Firewall for WinXP.

Anyway bypassing this in iTunes on Windows XP?

I know,i know that iTunes "ended" support for XP,but when i want to log in to iTunes with my apple ID i get this:

Is there anyway bypassing this?:}

I believe it will help Https proxy development too.

Root Certificates and Revoked Certificates for Windows XP

Since I have the whole thread no correct solution for the update of the Roots certificates and revoked certificates found, I hereby would like to offer a way to keep them up to date.
For the security of Windows XP after the last condition no official patches more for blocking div. Roots certificates and certificate update available.
For revoked Certificate Update "rvkroots.exe" Microsoft download (http://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=41542), unzip to a folder (eg with WinRAR), in "rvkroots.inf" entry in the string VERSION should "5,0,2195,0" loud and in VER "005". The next step is download the "http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/disallowedcert.sst" and paste the unzipped folder and replace older file. Then with e.g. (Create Self-Extracting Archive) WinRAR all files in the folder to an archive option SFX with the following comment:
TempMode
Silent=1
Overwrite=1
Setup=Rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection rvkroots.inf,DefaultInstall

pack and you have a current update for blocking unsafe Certificates!

For Root Certificate Update "rootsupd.exe" Microsoft download (http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe), unzip to a folder (eg with WinRAR), in "rootsupd.inf" entry in the string VERSION should "40,0,2195,0" loud and in VER "040" , In the next step,
"http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/updroots.sst" download and paste the unzipped folder and replace older files. Then with e.g. (Create Self-Extracting Archive) WinRAR all files in the folder to an archive option SFX with the following comment:
TempMode
Silent=1
Overwrite=1
Setup=Rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection rootsupd.inf,DefaultInstall

pack and you have a current root certificate update!

For all languages!

If you do approximately every 3 months.

To re-update extends the generated SFX files to open with WinRAR and drag to the archives newer downloads (.sst files) by drag and drop into it.

Is it worth to update to WMP11?

As being a WMP9 fan i never updated it to WMP 10 or 11 since i like WMP9 lightness and UIwmp9.JPG.602b75f506066850994cf2441f878b04.JPG

But my question is:

Is it worth upgrading to WMP11?:dubbio:
