Extreme Explorer 360 (Chromium 69) - General Discussion

Hello.

I was looking around for browsers for Windows XP today and apparently I dug quite deep because I found a chinese browser called Extreme Explorer 360 (Chrome 360) or something like that. It was advertised as Chromium 69 based so I decided to give it a try and to my biggest surprise it actually worked. :crazy: At first I thought that there was absolutely no way that it is based on Chromium 69 but after several tests it seems like it was in fact based on Chromium 69 which has been somehow backported to Windows XP and probably even Vista too.

The one thing that really bothers me to say the least is the fact that it is developed by a chinese company. Can I trust it?

Also, if they did actually get Chromium 69 completely working on Windows XP, isn't it possible for someone to maybe backport the original Chrome 69 browser too? :dubbio:

Here's why I do believe that it is in fact based on Chromium 69:

  • According to HTML5test the last official Chrome for XP gets the score of "489" while Chrome 360 gets the score of "528" which is a score that I have never seen on any other XP browser before.
  • This one might not be as a solid of a proof as it is just the user agent but WhatIsMyBrowser.com reports that it is in fact Chrome 69 running on Windows Server 2003 (XP x64)

So what are your thoughts on this guys? I am really confused whether I should just keep using it as it seems to be a much newer version of Chromium than any other browser on XP but is it actually safe?

In case someone wants to try it on their own:

EDIT:

So, I've been using it for a few weeks by now and to be honest, I am astonished! It seems to be much faster than Chrome 49, it is based on newer Chromium, there aren't any websites having trouble to load and on top of that it seems very reliable. Haven't had absolutely no problems with it.

I do actually recommend it as a main browser now as it is based on newer Chromium which is in fact much safer than the other older browsers.

Instagram videos not working in Firefox 52 ESR?

I've just noticed today that videos don't now seem to be appearing on Instagram pages with Firefox ESR 52.9.0.
There isn't even a placeholder, they are completely missing, all that's there of the posts is the text that should be beneath the video frame!
Static images are still displaying fine.
Is anyone else seeing this? They were fine yesterday!
The videos are still fine in Firefox 65 on Windows 10 needless to say.
I've tried spoofing the browser user agent using an extension, which I already have to do to get Facebook HTML5 videos to work, but none of the ones I've tried make any difference on Instagram.
:no:

Does anyone still have Widevine working in XP?

At some point in the last few months, a change was made that caused Widevine to lose its ability to play DRM media in XP.

Prior to this change I had at least six different chromium-based browsers that were playing DRM media just fine in XP via the Widevine plugin.

All of those browsers are now unable to play DRM media via Widevine.

You can test your browser here: https://bitmovin.com/demos/drm or here: https://demo.castlabs.com/

I think the change that was made might be the one which was mentioned here on  2018-09-05:

Root Certificates and Revoked Certificates for Windows XP

Since I have the whole thread no correct solution for the update of the Roots certificates and revoked certificates found, I hereby would like to offer a way to keep them up to date.
For the security of Windows XP after the last condition no official patches more for blocking div. Roots certificates and certificate update available.
For revoked Certificate Update "rvkroots.exe" Microsoft download (http://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=41542), unzip to a folder (eg with WinRAR), in "rvkroots.inf" entry in the string VERSION should "5,0,2195,0" loud and in VER "005". The next step is download the "http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/disallowedcert.sst" and paste the unzipped folder and replace older file. Then with e.g. (Create Self-Extracting Archive) WinRAR all files in the folder to an archive option SFX with the following comment:
TempMode
Silent=1
Overwrite=1
Setup=Rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection rvkroots.inf,DefaultInstall

pack and you have a current update for blocking unsafe Certificates!

For Root Certificate Update "rootsupd.exe" Microsoft download (http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/rootsupd.exe), unzip to a folder (eg with WinRAR), in "rootsupd.inf" entry in the string VERSION should "40,0,2195,0" loud and in VER "040" , In the next step,
"http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/updroots.sst" download and paste the unzipped folder and replace older files. Then with e.g. (Create Self-Extracting Archive) WinRAR all files in the folder to an archive option SFX with the following comment:
TempMode
Silent=1
Overwrite=1
Setup=Rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection rootsupd.inf,DefaultInstall

pack and you have a current root certificate update!

For all languages!

If you do approximately every 3 months.

To re-update extends the generated SFX files to open with WinRAR and drag to the archives newer downloads (.sst files) by drag and drop into it.

I work with a lot of Windows XP computers and well I have to connect some to the internet (So I can do junk like get drivers on them, install software or just playing music in the background while I work on them)

Anyways, for the past while I've been using Chrome for web browsing but Chrome's starting to feel slow and a lot of sites aren't working right anymore.  So what's the best browsers for XP - one that's more are more up to date? (side note: I use Firefox on my main xp pc, as it works best with YouTube)

AOL users: you may be aware that AOL recently discontinued free access with the traditional AOL client. The only way to access mail for free is to access it using a web browser and going to aol.com. To continue using the client, you must upgrade to AOL Desktop Gold and pay a low monthly fee.

However, AOL has now released AOL Shield (free) which is a "optimized browser for users on dial-up internet connections and/or older operating systems. AOL Shield is optimized for older operating systems like Windows XP and Windows Vista. It also has features that enable it to run on computers with a dial-up internet connection."

Introducing - Unofficial Windows XP SP4

Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4 (Unofficial).

Windows XP SP4 (Service Pack 4) is a cumulative update rollup for Windows XP.

Windows XP SP4 Final is now available!

1 - UPDATE [June 7, 2019]: Post-SP4 Update Pack released!

This final update pack should be applied to Windows XP installation media immediately after slipstreaming SP4 v3.1b to a Windows XP RTM/SP1/SP2/SP3 source. This will update installation media to May 2019, including every single update released until the POSReady 2009 end-of-life in May 2019. Download available at RyanVM.net.

2 - UPDATE - 15 OCT 2018:
For novice users that do not want to wait for 20-30 minutes after installing XP SP4 AND rebooting
For all .NET haters...

A NEW RELEASE OF UNOFFICIAL SP4 3.1B WITHOUT .NET FRAMEWORK

This release will not install .NET Framework in both live and slipstreamed install, unless:
- Media Center Edition is used -> .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 is installed
- Tablet PC Edition is used -> .NET Framework 1.0 SP3 is installed
Users can still install .NET FWs of their choice from the Add/Remove Components wizard in Control Panel
This alternative SP4 release is called:
WindowsXP-USP4-v3.1b-NODOTNET-x86-ENU.exe

In addition, XP SP4 OEM Preinstallation Kit ISOs with SCSI drivers, and an updated MUI ISO have been released!

3 - IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR XP SP4 USERS [08/03/2016]: Microsoft has changed its WU update detection strategy. The following key must be removed to continue receiving automatic updates from WU:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WindowsEmbedded

Use the sp4_march16_wufix.reg found inside the respective zip file at my Google Drive in order to automate the process. Version 3.1a users don't need to do anything more than that.

A new v3.1b version has been released with this change, just for new installs. No other updates have been added.

Windows XP SP4 can installed on any version of Windows XP with SP1 or later installed or slipstreamed into any Windows XP installation source (except for Embedded versions). It includes all updated components and hotfixes for Windows XP in a single, convenient package. Except for the SP4 package installer main executable (update.exe) and a cosmetic resource modification sysdm.cpl no other binary file has been modified, everything is original from Microsoft Corporation.

Microsoft .NET Frameworks 4.0, 3.5, 1.1, 1.0 are included in this package. .NET Framework 1.0 will be installed only with Tablet PC Edition or Media Center Edition (Upgrade only). .NET Framework 4.0 is disabled by default.
It's possible to split the slipstreamed installation source into two 650 MB CD-ROMs, which can be essential for older computers. You can also create 6 Bootable Floppy Disks to install Windows XP on older systems which cannot boot from CD-ROM.

Furthermore, Windows XP SP4 includes security enhancements that address issues not fixed by Microsoft Updates. It also includes performance tweaks that should make your PC run blazingly fast.

NOTE:  Before installing SP4 on a system with many post-SP3 updates installed, follow the steps described here (do not restart your PC after applying these steps, just run the SP4 installer and then reboot):

http://www.rarst.net/software/failed-install-catalog-files/

This will prevent a common error message: "Failed to install catalog files"

Although SP4 installer takes steps to automatically delete these files, it may require manual intervention in some cases.

Enjoy Windows XP Service Pack 4.

Private Search Engines

Private Search Engines - The Ultimate Guide (2019) recently updated by Sven Taylor elects Startpage as the best private search engine.

Quote

...Finding the best private search engine for your unique needs is a subjective process and there’s no one-size-fits-all, with many factors to consider. Ideally, a search engine would return great results while also respecting your privacy. Unfortunately, there is often a tradeoff here, so it really comes down to the user and what you determine works best for your situation.

That being said, Startpage earned the title of “best private search engine” for 2019, and we’ll explain why below....

https://restoreprivacy.com/private-search-engine/

Pale Moon default search engines do not include Startpage.
For those who want to add this search engine:

https://addons.palemoon.org/search-plugins/

With New Moon I choose to save my personal settings without a cookie.
I set the Homepage in New Moon via the Obfuscated URL

With I.E.8 it is not possible to use Startpage,I use DuckDuckGo.

Which Search Engine do you prefer?

[Thread split from a previous one]

So?  You're just pointing out departments where IT personnel should be fired for running behind ...lol.

I'm OK for running XP when NOTHING connects to it (like my music system - but I only use it because the computer was already set up and working.  I would never do it again).  But professional environments that are liable in any way should use supported software.

Taskmanager showing I'm using more RAM than I have!

Hello, I have noticed recently that when I check taskmanager, the RAM usage shows as if it were using more RAM than I even have installed (1GB). Although it shows such high usage compared to what I really have, my computer still seems to be responsive and fast. I have also noticed that after a restart, the ram usage will be back to normal, but when it is left on for a few hours the RAM usage gets a lot higher than it should ever be. I have run multiple virus scans with Malwarebytes, superantispyware, and spybot with a clean report. So why is taskmanager falsely showing such high RAM usage??? Replies are appreciated! Check out the picture I have attached.

POSReady 2009 updates ported to Windows XP SP3 ENU

First, before making the registry change below, you should download and install Microsoft's updated Windows Installer 4.5 (KB942288-v3) from THIS LINK for Windows XP 32-bit, which is what we assume you have.  (The MS article that explains this updated installer is HERE.)

Next, copy the text given by @Sebijk (below) to notepad and save it as POSReady.txt
Make sure what you copy starts with the "Windows..." line and has two blank lines after the line that ends in "00000001"
Rename the file POSReady.txt to POSReady.reg, right-click on it, select "Merge", then "Yes".
Reboot the system.

On 5/21/2014 at 2:54 PM, Sebijk said:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\PosReady]
"Installed"=dword:00000001

and POSReady2009 Updates will install on XP + Windows Update [then] shows the updates for POSReady 2009 :)

=================######=================

Direct Links to WU/MU (just in case...):

for Windows Update	http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate
for Microsoft Update	http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate

=================######=================

NOW, sometimes Microsoft Update (MU) takes a long time to get anywhere - sometimes a LONG LONG time.   Sometimes even longer than that.
When MU takes ages to find anything, stop it, install by hand the Office 2007 Comparability Pack and all Office 2003 updates (they usually don't require rebooting), then the latest IE8 update, then reboot.   After that, MU will find all remaining relevant updates fast.
If using Windows Update (WU) instead, then the latest IE8 update and a reboot should be enough.
Moreover, as both Office 2003 and 2007 are now EoS, the latest IE8 update and a reboot may be enough for both MU and WU.
See: <link> , <link> , <link> , and <link> .

=================######=================

THEN, after you've installed the initial truck-load of updates for POS since 2014, if you want to skip ahead and enable TLS 1.1 and 1.2 in your Internet Options - Advanced, go to this < LINK > and follow Heinoganda's instructions.  And then you might UNcheck TLS 1.0.

But please promise to come back here and slowly and carefully read every page of this thread and take notes because there'll be a test later and it's only 568 pages at this point.

Two Questions About Diyba 128GB PAE Patch

$

Patch download here:

https://retrosystemsrevival.blogspot.com/2018/01/windows-xp-ram-patch.html

Instructions found in the 7z archive:

1. Place contents of the "For System32 folder
into C:\WINDOWS\system32; Replace .exe and .dll
files in System32

2. Enter "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers", copy contents
of "For Drivers" folder (all .sys files) to the dictionary

3. Enabling PAE
Click the start menu, then run (alternatively
pressing win + r). Type "C:\boot.ini" then add
"\PAE" at the very end of the last line of text.
SAVE the file!

4. Reboot and enjoy up to 128gb of ram on your
Windows XP installation ;)

I understand the instructions, except for the word "dictionary." Is the patch author
using the word "dictionary" because of this definition for the SYS file extension?

"SYS is a file extension for system file device driver or hardware configuration file
format used by Microsoft Windows. A SYS file also houses system settings and variables
for the drivers that enable Windows to talk to your hardware and devices."

The patch download is actually two 7z archives:

1. WinXP128GB_PAE_PATCH_Dibya.7z
2. Windows_XP_128GB_double_pae_addon_final_byDibya.7z

Number 2 is found inside number 1. Do I extract everything in both archives? I'm confused.

Windows Services for UNIX (NFS client)

I'm putzing with a new Synology NAS and was wondering about NFS for XP.  When it comes to SMB, XP is only capable of SMB-1 and no service pack seems to exist to give it SMB-2 capability.  When it comes to NFS, there seems to be something called "Windows Services for UNIX" for which the MS links no long work and archive.org does not seem to have them.  So I'm wondering if they would be on any MSDN or technet CD's.  If this package exists on MSDN then I will likely have it, but I'd need to know which CD to look for.  Any ideas?  Anyone ever get NFS working on XP?
