Portable App has Problem with Read-Only Folder Attribute

$

XP Pro_SP3

An ancient glitch with XP has never been a problem, until I tried a portable app called File Extension
Changer on a USB flash drive.

Read-only is automatically ticked in all XP folders.  There are thousands of posts and blogs about
this subject.  Here is an old Neowin post explaining why all XP folders are created with a read-only
attribute.

https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/647556-read-only-unchecking-bugged/

File Extension Changer displays an error message (see attached image) because every folder appears
to be write-protected.  We all know that a read-only folder attribute is usually meaningless in XP.

The solution would be simple if unticking read-only worked.  It doesn't.  Is there a workaround for
this problem, or should I abandon File Extension Changer?

Hi.

I added a function which you can change jpeg quality with registry to mspaint.exe.

http://blog.livedoor.jp/blackwingcat/archives/1952917.html

You can download English version from Here (You can find "mspainten" in article )

It use the following registry

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Paint\Settings

JpegQuality REG_DWORD

(Original  mspaint value is fixed 75%)

If you use Win2000, you should install gdiplus.dll to your PC. :3

XP on Ryzen?

Hi,

did anybody here try XP (32bit or 64bit) on the Ryzen/AM4 platform?

What was the result?

Which HW did you try?

P.S.: I found only two threads that mentioned XP on Ryzen at all. If, for some reason, i failed at searching on MSFN, and missed YOUR thread, just throw in a link to that thread here. Thank you!

P.P.S.: I don't own a Ryzen yet, i'm still evaluating if i invest that money. If i did already, i'd not post questions, but results...

P.P.P.S.: If you did NOT try, please help keeping this thread compact, by opening a new thread for rants on why not, or why to use a VM, or whatever. This thread is meant for people trying on hardware. Thanks for your cooperation...

Simple XP 32BIT 64Gb RAM (true Pae) Guide

64Gb Ram XP Patch here > https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8TGI9QQCUYdVzdiLXdBVW1rWjg .

Found it on the internet, and unfortunatelly I lost the adress, but I've save it on my drive.

Disclaimer > I won't be held responsible for anyone bricking their OS by trying this.

By downloading this patch, using it,and potentially destroying your XP because you didnt back up your boot.ini, you agree that is solely your responsability.

Always do backups . Have an XP image at ready, backup your boot.ini in a text file, and be sure all your important data is safe.

That being said, if one follows those steps carefully (btw,I chose second method-you only change the last line in the boot.ini), nothing can truly go wrong, and in the end, you're gonna have a nice SP3 running on 8,12,or 16 Gb RAM,according to your memory installed .

I'm using it for a week everyday with no issues.

And again, I think you guys are well versed in Windows,so it should be fine .

Issues Connecting to Internet

Hello,

I am currently attempting to create a dual-OS system on my gaming PC with Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit. I already have the dual boot setup between both OS and am working on finding drivers for the Windows XP side.

The only drivers I currently have are the one for the SATA ACHI connection and the network adapter.

The network adapter is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, hardware ID: PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8168&SUBSYS_E0001458&REV_0C.

I found a Windows XP supported driver for it and installed it on my system. After rebooting the computer, it installs correctly, and the network icon showed up in the bottom right-hand corner of the task bar. However, when I plugged in the ethernet cord, nothing happened. I tried using a different cord and modem port, still nothing. It does work properly on the Windows 10 side however.

Does anyone might know what might be the cause of this?

Here are my system specs if it helps:

Gigabyte - GA-H110M-A Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard | Intel - Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor |Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1060 3GB 3GB Windforce OC Video Card | 16 GB DDR4 RAM

Also, as a side note, I would appreciate it if any of you could tell me where I can find drivers for my system for Windows XP. They're a bit hard to dig up, what with little official support for it. If you need hardware ID, I can give it to you.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Is there Creative Sound Core 3D soundcard XP 32 bit driver?

Hello,
i looking for new X99 board compatible with Windows XP, i already have some X99 which is working with Windows XP (so chipset itself is not problem), but it had other problems, so i want to replace it.

I really like Gigabyte boards like this one - https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-X99-Gaming-5P-rev-10#sp , but they have for me unknow soundcard -  Creative® Sound Core 3D chip,  officially there is only Windows 7+ driver,
but maybe XP driver exist.. I tried to extract hardwareID from drivers package and search for drivers, but im not quite sure, if i found right one.

In attachment is *.inf file from Windows 7 package, but in signature is WindowsNT, does someone know that is also Win XP compatible?  And are these HardwareIDs?

Corrent order to slipstream updates?

$

0

Hello! I'm trying to create an updated XP SP3 x86 image with all the updates since SP3. I need some help on figuring out the order to install updates downloaded from WUD.
What I have so far is:

1. Download all updates via WUD using the list from

2. Slipstream WMP11 via WMP11 integrator
3. Slipstream IE8 via nlite
4. Slipstream all updates from folders: Security Updates, Non-Security Updates, WMP 11 Updates
5. Slipstream AHCI/SATA 3rd party drivers using DPs_Base MassStorage pack

Now, for the questions...

a) Is the order above correct?
b) Does WMP11 integrator works for XP x64? It outputs an error.

Thank you.

Creating bootable pendrive using cmd

I have a document for creating a bootable pendrive using cmd - for Win7.

There it says that you cannot use the method for XP or Win8, because "you cannot select the primary partition in command prompt."

Since my goal is to install XP, I wonder if, and how I could make a bootable pendrive for installing XP?

Microsoft .net framework installaion breaks after applying updates?

$

Hello all,

I'm having a very strange issue where when i apply certain update(s) (not sure which) to the .net framework from windows update, it all goes south and .Net frameworks 2-4 break completely. .net 1.1 sp1 remains working and checks out fine with the netfx setup verifier (every other version fails verification.) I've reinstalled windows already and it's still happening. the only solution is to remove the offending versions of .net framework and reinstall them.

But then updates need to be applied again...

I am running USP4 and POSReady updates if that matters.

My desktop PC with XP seems to be unaffected. (just my thinkpad T60 has issues.)

I'll see if i can narrow down which updates cause the issue.

EDIT: i the yellow sheild alerted me to more .net updates, maybe applying these will somehow fix it...

XP32, Windows Update & svchost 100%: OTHER solutions?

$

0

This topic has been discussed to death, but since I wasn't able to solve it using the advise found around the Web, I was hoping to get ADDITIONAL possible solutions to this problem.  If it doesn't lead us anywhere, I'm OK with it being closed or terminated.

It concerns a computer (not my main rig) that is running XP 32-bit which is primarily used by my 3-year-old niece to watch YT videos.  I wanted to test the POSReady 2009 registry edit on it before applying it to my main rig, which is also running XP 32-bit.  The problematic computer has had Automatic Updates disabled ever since Microsoft ended extended support.  The problems I have observed:

1) When enabling Automatic Updates or when going to Windows/Microsoft Update with Internet Explorer, an instance of svchost immediately reaches 50% of CPU usage (100% of one core) and both the CPU fan and rear exhaust fan are blowing away to lower the temp on the "PresHott" CPU which is at around 80°C then.  This doesn't stop until I close IE or reboot the PC.

2) The search for updates using Windows or Microsoft Update never finishes.

What I have done in an attempt to fix it:

1) Disabled anti-virus.  No dice.

2) Manually renamed the catroot2 folder and deleted the SoftwareDistribution\Download in Safe Mode.  No change.

3) Changed the startup type of the Background Transfer Intelligence Service (BITS) from Manual to Automatic.  Didn't help.

4) Reset IE8 to default.  No change.

5) Followed the instructions found here to install Windows Update Agent 3.0 (which was already installed), and to run a batch file that re-registers a whole bunch of system files and fixes the catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution folders (which didn't help either).  I didn't download KB927891 because the link refers to an executable intended for XP 64-bit.

6) Created an updated WUA 3.0 installer using a batch script by MSFN.org members and installed it, but it complained it was already installed.  The installed binaries are indeed the same.

7) Ran the command sc config wuauserv type= own to have Windows Update run in an svchost process of its own.  No dice.

8) Deleted "Networkservice" under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost after backing it up.  Didn't help, so I restored it.

9) "Downgraded" from Microsoft Update to Windows Update.  No dice.

10) Installed the latest cumulative update for IE8 for Windows XP 32-bit that I could find, which was the KB4018271 update from May 2017 (with binaries from April 2017).  No dice.

11) Installed the latest cumulative update for IE8 for PosReady 2009, which appears to be the KB4025252 update from July 2017.  It installed without a glitch, but it didn't help resolve the Windows Update problem.

12) Uninstalled IE8, rebooted, re-installed IE8 "with updates" and rebooted.  No dice.  Installed KB4025252 and rebooted.  Still the same.

13) Just let Windows Update run.  The CPU fan and rear exhaust fan are blowing away like there's no tomorrow and the CPU temp is over 80°C, which I don't like.  I let it run for more than half a day and it was still searching, so I closed IE.

So... What else is there to try?  It could be that more updates than the latest cumulative update for IE8 are needed to satisfy Windows Update.  A list of prerequisite updates like the ones for Windows Vista and Windows 7 might be of help.

Disable Web Fonts in Google Chrome/Mozilla Firefox

$

I have noticed that remote web fonts have made some web pages difficult to read clearly, and contribute to browser slowdown with font rendering.

If you follow the instructions in this link (credit birdie at TechPowerUp), you experience faster web browsing speeds, and (in my opinion) clearer text. I noticed a huge speed increase.

Disabling web fonts in Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome

Some of us hate downloadable web fonts so here's how you can stop websites (including techpowerup) from forcing their glorious fonts down your throat.

1) Mozilla Firefox

Open about:config
Set "gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled" to false.

2) Google Chrome
Right Click Chrome's launcher icon, click "Properties".

At the end of the launcher string add the following:

" --disable-remote-fonts" (without quotes).

You're done.

Introducing - Unofficial Windows XP SP4

$

Welcome to Windows XP Service Pack 4 (Unofficial).

Windows XP SP4 (Service Pack 4) is a cumulative update rollup for Windows XP.

Windows XP SP4 Final is now available!

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR XP SP4 USERS [08/03/2016]: Microsoft has changed its WU update detection strategy. The following key must be removed to continue receiving automatic updates from WU:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\WindowsEmbedded

Use the sp4_march16_wufix.reg found inside the respective zip file at my Google Drive in order to automate the process. Version 3.1a users don't need to do anything more than that.

A new v3.1b version has been released with this change, just for new installs. No other updates have been added.

Windows XP SP4 can installed on any version of Windows XP with SP1 or later installed or slipstreamed into any Windows XP installation source (except for Embedded versions). It includes all updated components and hotfixes for Windows XP in a single, convenient package. Except for the SP4 package installer main executable (update.exe) and a cosmetic resource modification sysdm.cpl no other binary file has been modified, everything is original from Microsoft Corporation.

Microsoft .NET Frameworks 4.0, 3.5, 1.1, 1.0 are included in this package. .NET Framework 1.0 will be installed only with Tablet PC Edition or Media Center Edition (Upgrade only). .NET Framework 4.0 is disabled by default.
It's possible to split the slipstreamed installation source into two 650 MB CD-ROMs, which can be essential for older computers. You can also create 6 Bootable Floppy Disks to install Windows XP on older systems which cannot boot from CD-ROM.

Furthermore, Windows XP SP4 includes security enhancements that address issues not fixed by Microsoft Updates. It also includes performance tweaks that should make your PC run blazingly fast.

NOTE:  Before installing SP4 on a system with many post-SP3 updates installed, follow the steps described here (do not restart your PC after applying these steps, just run the SP4 installer and then reboot):

http://www.rarst.net/software/failed-install-catalog-files/

This will prevent a common error message: "Failed to install catalog files"

Although SP4 installer takes steps to automatically delete these files, it may require manual intervention in some cases.

Enjoy Windows XP Service Pack 4.

Intel USB 3.0 xHCI XP driver

Are there any USB or driver programmers here that can help create a simple Intel USB 3.0 xHCI driver for XP?  Looking for some basic functionality first to detect and connect a USB keyboard and a USB mouse.  Intel was lazy and didn't bother making one so looking for some brilliant minds out there to help accomplish this so XP can remain functional many years to come.

Thanks in advance!!! :w00t:
