Latest Version of Software Running on XP

$

Hello nice people!

Should the XP user community have a thread about the latest version of applications (and runtimes and so on) that run on well updated but unmodified XP sp3? As inspired by
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/133014-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-2000/
because more and more software editors drop the XP compatibility, so just now would be the right time to write it down.

This might need someone who maintains the thread for readability, maybe to keep a front page with the raw information.

What do you think?

Introducing portabat https://github.com/tumagonx/portabat

This is custom 7zsfx (7zip SDK 17.00) that make your batch more realistically like an executable. Try demo here https://github.com/tumagonx/portabat/releases

Editing:
All you need is open portabat-test.exe with 7zip and edit hello.bat or add your own batch, no need to copy /b or create config.txt. See filename execution order from homepage

Requirement: XP or later

Note:
ReactOS cmd is about 95% compatible, if you're batch nerd you can see few different quirks behavior compared to windows cmd
separate 7z.sfx available at https://github.com/tumagonx/portabat/raw/master/basebin/7z.sfx (about 20KB if packed)

Suggestions are welcome!

DirectX for Windows XP

I have a Dell Optiples GX620. Pentium D 3.0ghz, 4gb ram (3.2GB Readable), 128GBssd, Windows XP Pro 32bit. I stuck in a MSI nVidia 210 512mb pci-e video card. It is DirectX 10 ready. Anyway of getting DirectX 10 on Windows Xp? I have 9.0c right now.

I did use the forum search and all I found was talk about it and dead links.

If this is a dead horse, I'm sorry, I just recently began trying to go back to Windows XP. I'm a bit out of the know.....

Thank You.

Spoofing Firefox 53 (and newer versions) on Windows 2000 and XP

$

NOTE: I originally posted this in the 2000 forum, but it would also be useful duplicated here since XP has such a large user base.

As we know, most websites have artificial browser requirements for using their website. Firefox can be spoofed easily on Windows 2000 and XP. I don't recommend Chrome for spoofing, because 1) Chrome does not really work well on 2000, and 2) Chrome can only store user agent changes temporarily, while the Developer Console is open.

By visiting Citibank's website with Firefox 48 (last working on Windows 2000), it says the browser is out of date and not supported.

citi_ff48_1.jpg

So, we go into about:config , create a string value called general.useragent.override , and make the value Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:53.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0

This tells the browser to report Windows XP, and Firefox 53.0. Again, we know that XP cannot really support Firefox 53.

citi_ff48_2.jpg

After saving, reopen Firefox and go back to Citibank's website. The outdated browser warning is gone. This proves an artificial browser warning.

citi_ff48_3.jpg

Also, if you visit a website to check the browser, it reports that it is Firefox 53 on XP, even though we know we are running Firefox 48 on Windows 2000.

This trick will also be useful on XP, since Firefox will not be updated past version 51 going forward.

Since 14 of april 2016 there is no longer possible to update MSE; after multiple attempts on several systems the result is always the same: error code 0X800700c1! My guess is microsoft stop porting MSE updates to XP version of MSE! What good AV can still be used with XP - good performance and low on resources?

Keyboard won't work unless keyboard driver is unstalled

Title says it all!

My Windows XP installation's keyboard refuses to type unless the generic microsoft keyboard driver is uninstalled. Afterwards everything works fine. Unfortunately, this issue keeps coming back upon every boot-up now and requires me to uninstall the driver every time.

EMET on up-to-date Windows XP

You should also consider installing EMET 4.1 for an extra layer of security: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41138

Newer EMET versions can be used, but these may cause some problems under Windows XP.

Just thought I'd report my experience today with EMET, something I wasn't at all familiar with before today.

I downloaded and installed version 4.1 (Update 1) as recommended, and it seemed to work fine although it was throwing five warnings into my event log that five "PinRules" were out of date, having expired on 01/08/15.

As I didn't want to just delete them, for obvious reasons, I looked into how to update them.

I found what I thought was an answer here.

I downloaded the "easy fix", which failed because I hadn't installed EMET in the default folder.

To be fair, the page does warn you of that, but it's still stupid when the EMET installer allows you to choose a different installation destination!

Anyway, I uninstalled EMET and reinstalled it in its default location, and the "easy fix" then completed successfully, but didn't fix the event log errors!

There were a couple of other issues as well, the system tray icon didn't work as it should, it popped up a message saying "administrator rights needed" if you tried to use it, which is nonsense as I am an administrator of course!

More seriously, pressing the "Trust" button at the top of the interface resulted in an exception error message coming up.

post-84253-0-23707600-1450369114_thumb.j

I therefore decided to try a later version, although this isn't recommended.

I installed version 5.1, which is not stated to be compatible with XP (although it is with Server 2003).

That installed fine, and the error messages about expired certificates in the Event Log went away, so good result there!

The only issues outstanding are that despite the fact that it appeared after the first install, the system tray icon now does not seem to appear at all, even when it's enabled, and the crash on using the Trust button still happens.

I'm not worried about the icon obviously, but the crash is a strange one. As I said, it was doing the same with version 4.1, which is supposed to be compatible with XP, so it's a bit of a mystery why it's happening.

Does this tie up with other people's experience with this?

I appreciate this is a bit off-topic, but it is relevant to the thread as EMET is one of the recommendations to use for maximum security.

Worthless OSes

At this time xp basically works just fine. Perhaps with some minor things. 7 or others don't work better. It is robbing and insulting. The whole OS-thing. So also xp. I don't mean Linux. I think it is a speciality that is also free.

It could take some time, but no one or enough people really don't have anything better to do. I think that it could be worth it to think about pressing charges. By a lot of people so the risk is minimal.

I think it could be interesting here to look at and talk about how the manufacturer would really have to pay back any profits from a certain point in time and even also any payments done in connection to new operating systems. Meaning the manufacturer has an enormous debt. And the whole thing is a fraud.

Quality of OSes

About a day ago I made a thread that was closed (http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/ 177034-worthless-oses/  ---A space added, not preferring a pop link at this time//don't know the name of it). I contacted this site about it, as it is clearly a mistake.

The subject was the quality of operating systems. Where xp(/2000) is central somehow.

A thread about quality can never be a fault.

So here a new attempt.

XP-ish as an operating system seems to be best working all in all. A touch and some technical aspects of later operating systems COULD be interesting. But that is not what is being served. This thread is about how this can become how it is.

Graphics Bug after installing Aug 2017 Security Updates on XP, too!

$

Well, the issue reported on Graphics Bug in Windows 7 after installing August 2017 Security Updates, and also by Woody, rather unsurprisingly, also occurs on XP SP3...
It only affects those using more than one monitor, and req monitors to be setup in such a way that certain parts of the screen have negative screen positions. For example a secondary monitor setup to the left of the main monitor, or with a higher top border than the main monitor, or both (which is the case of one of my machines). Then the secondary monitor starts acting up. Solution? None, yet, for XP. Workaround: uninstall KB4035055. By doing that the latest win32k.sys (v. 5.1.2600.7312) will be replaced by v. 5.1.2600.7297 (from KB4025877). This issue only happens in the conditions described, everybody using a single monitor, and people using more than one monitor in unaffected spatial arrangementes may safely ignore it and keep the latest win32k,sys! HTH

Software to burn iso images

I am afraid I have to ask for a little more help than I used to. Web sites are becoming ever more restricted and i am getting ever older and can't find the utility programs that  used before. Searching for Iso burning programs, I found samples of the sceen images of the program I used before - but I am not able to find where or how to download it. Is magic iso the one I want? To begin with, I just to want to make a copy of my MS original XP disk to work with, so that I don't spoil the original

Installing XP on new motherboards.

There is something terribly wrong with the second machine that I installed with a M5A99FX PRO R2.0 motherboard. Everything runs at snails pace and I can't stand it. I changed the SATA parameters from AHCI to IDE but don't see much difference. Anyway, I'm going to get a SSD drive and hope a miracle happens. What could possibly be different on this machine; the first one runs perfectly! With a SSD drive though.

Wikipedia to Drop Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) Support on October 17 - Use Firefox 52 ESR

$

I occasionally use Internet Explorer 8 to test what sites still work with it. Today I was researching Silverlight history, and was greeted with a recommendation/advice to discontinue using Internet Explorer 8. Wikipedia is advising all Windows XP users to migrate to Firefox 52 ESR. It displays the warning in over 15 different languages.

"We are removing support for the legacy 3DES cryptographic cipher, which your browser software relies on to connect to our sites. This is usually caused by using Internet Explorer on Windows XP, but could also be caused by other ancient browsers or user agents, or could be interference from corporate or personal "Web Security" software which actually downgrades connection security.

For now, you can try reloading the page again to continue, but we'll be removing support for these insecure connections completely by October 17, 2017 (2017-10-17), which will block your access to our sites if you haven't upgraded in time.

See also the HTTPS Browser Recommendations page on Wikitech for more-detailed information."

There is no direct link for the page Wikipedia redirected me to, but I pasted it into MS Word so you can view the graphics/text as they appeared on the page: http://sdfox7.com/xp/files/Your Browser.doc

Display of icons from large executables

$

I have noticed that older versions of Windows will not extract and display an icon from executable files over a certain size (over 600 to 1100 MB). There doesn't seem to be a nice round limit below which icons would be guaranteed to show. Until now, from experience with my own computer, I assumed that size was 1 GB, and I have made self-extracting archives with this volume size. However, on another XP computer the files would show the default blue window icon. On Windows 98, even 700 MB files are without an icon. A Server 2003 installation with only 384 MB of RAM will show icons of all files except one which is 1.17 GB. Vista shows all icons.

The actual prepended program where the icon might be located is actually only a few hundred KB, and Windows is aware of it. When running the program over network, only a small portion gets downloaded. Unrelated to the question at hand, XP SP2 appears to download slightly more while searching for the cursed digital signature, and is noticeably more unresponsive compared to Windows 2000 or XP SP1. Neither displays an icon.

I am curious where the limit is set, if it is a function of available memory, swap file, memory fragmentation or... ?

So?  You're just pointing out departments where IT personnel should be fired for running behind ...lol.

I'm OK for running XP when NOTHING connects to it (like my music system - but I only use it because the computer was already set up and working.  I would never do it again).  But professional environments that are liable in any way should use supported software.
