Hello!
For some time, on Steam, I get a message that from January 1, 2019 will stop working, due to the end of support for Windows XP. Is there a way to circumvent this? My computer is quite old and is doing the best on XP, so I do not want to switch to something newer.
Anyone have an idea for steam for XP in 2019?

SMB Share Windows Server 2019 and Windows XP
Hi,
I'm trying to make an SMB Share between Windows Server 2019 Datacenter and Windows XP.
Both computers are in the same network and in the same workgroup, they can ping each other, but XP cannot access the SMB Share created by Windows Server 2019 Datacenter.
They both see the Linux Raid, so I'm using it as "bridge" to move files between them, but it would be better to make XP connect to WS2019 directly.
I think that XP can't see the share 'cause WS2019 is using an SMB version that is too high for XP, so how can I intentionally lower it in WS2019?
Can I use different SMB version for different folders?
I don't wanna lower it for everything, 'cause it was an old version of SMB that made Wannacrypt spread across the network of many corporations.
Besides, the network administrator might give me a green light for lowering it for a single folder, but he would definitely give me a red light for lowering it for all the share.
Thank you in advance.
How to Activate Windows XP Online in 2018
Since there's not much info out there on the web unless you spend a considerable amount of time googling, I thought i'd post the solution so more people can find it quickly
Turns out it's exceedingly easy to restore Windows XP Online Activation
- Open the Start Menu
- Right Click on Internet and choose "Internet Properties"
- Goto the Advanced Tab
- Scroll down near the bottom to the Security Section and uncheck both:
- "Check for publisher's certificate revocation"
- "Check for server certificate revocation"
Now you can activate online as normal or use the "Windows XP Product Key Change Tool"
I would reccomend re-enabling both options afterwards even if you dont use Internet Exploder (which you REALLY REALLY should not be)
You may want to consider pinning this post so that its easier to find for people having this ever more common problem
MyPal Browser
Just wondering if Mypal v27.9.4 browser is still going to be updated? (or) Should I shift to Roytam1's PM v28.1.0a1 version.
Who has the latest Firefox ESR Installed?
Hello everyone!
I have been using Mozilla Firefox ESR as my main Web browser for the big "social media" which demand all the latest "HTML5" and JavaScript dingledongles and multimedia support.
I have just received a notification that the latest update, 52.6.0 ESR, is now available for download. I read the release notes and it says that the update includes a patch to mitigate the new Spectre vulnerability.
Before I irreversibly alter my system by updating, I wonder
- Would this update cause intolerable slowdown to a browser which is tasked daily with loading some of the slowest, most horrible Web sites ever to be constructed, or
- Would it be stupid to forgo this update because of the security risk, being online, as well as all the other security updates that are part of this package.
Thanks,
Thomas
Spoofing Firefox 53 (and newer versions) on Windows 2000 and XP
NOTE: I originally posted this in the 2000 forum, but it would also be useful duplicated here since XP has such a large user base.
As we know, most websites have artificial browser requirements for using their website. Firefox can be spoofed easily on Windows 2000 and XP. I don't recommend Chrome for spoofing, because 1) Chrome does not really work well on 2000, and 2) Chrome can only store user agent changes temporarily, while the Developer Console is open.
By visiting Citibank's website with Firefox 48 (last working on Windows 2000), it says the browser is out of date and not supported.
So, we go into about:config , create a string value called general.useragent.override , and make the value Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:53.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0
This tells the browser to report Windows XP, and Firefox 53.0. Again, we know that XP cannot really support Firefox 53.
After saving, reopen Firefox and go back to Citibank's website. The outdated browser warning is gone. This proves an artificial browser warning.
Also, if you visit a website to check the browser, it reports that it is Firefox 53 on XP, even though we know we are running Firefox 48 on Windows 2000.
This trick will also be useful on XP, since Firefox will not be updated past version 51 going forward.
CHKDSK Different OS: Truth or Urban Legend?
I've been using the Windows Check Disk since March 2000, but I've always been told that it has to be used with the same OS.
In other words, a Windows 2000 install shouldn't be scanned using a Windows XP CD and vice-versa, 'cause CHKDSK versions were created with a specific OS in mind and might misbehave while repairing another system.
Here I am, 18 years later, without Windows 2000, but still using my XP CD (actually, I turned it into an ISO to use it via USB long time ago) whenever I have to do a check disk (I know that I could leave the OS repair itself, but I prefer to use the CD).
Anyway, I now wonder: is really true what they told me 18 years ago and does it still apply to modern OS (Win Vista -> Win Vista / Win 7 -> Win7 / Win8 -> Win8 / Win8.1 -> Win 8.1 / Win10 -> Win10)?
And how about Windows Server Versions? Let's say Windows Server 2008 R2. It's made with the Win7 kernel (revised and corrected) with added features. Can Windows Server be used to scan its Windows Desktop equivalent?
Just asking out of curiosity.
Thank you in advance. ^_^
Microsoft security essentials and Windows XP
Since 14 of april 2016 there is no longer possible to update MSE; after multiple attempts on several systems the result is always the same: error code 0X800700c1! My guess is microsoft stop porting MSE updates to XP version of MSE! What good AV can still be used with XP - good performance and low on resources?
Netflix playback
Getting digital rights management (DRM) Error when trying to play Netflix videos. This problem just started (only on XP). Getting it on both New Moon and My pal browsers. Have tried the following fixes......
Clear Browser, Close Browser, Netflix sign out then sign in again. Restart computer. Reinstall Microsoft Silverlight.
Click on Microsoft Sliverlight and clear application storage. Make sure appropriate checks are in place.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\PlayReady
Right click on the "mspr.hds" file and choose Delete
C:\Documents and Settings\Brian MacCallum\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Silverlight
Right click on the "is" folder and choose Delete
Nothing has worked. Can anyone help?
Control USB drive letter during XP install
I'm installing XP from a USB flash drive created with Rufus. I want XP on the second HDD partition as D:. But XP's installer decides that the USB drive is D, so Windows ends up on E.
How can I force a certain drive letter order in the installer? Or maybe, create a bootable USB XP setup where the USB drive appears as an optical drive?
Extra details: I've pre-created the partitions before XP's installer because I want them all to be primary, not logical. If I start from an unpartitioned drive all is good, because the installer doesn't assign the USB drive any letter (in the partitioning screen it appears as "-:" instead of "D:"). In that case, the HDD partitions properly get consecutive drive letters.
Latest Version of Software Running on XP
Hello nice people!
Should the XP user community have a thread about the latest version of applications (and runtimes and so on) that run on well updated but unmodified XP sp3? As inspired by
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/133014-last-versions-of-software-for-windows-2000/
because more and more software editors drop the XP compatibility, so just now would be the right time to write it down.
This might need someone who maintains the thread for readability, maybe to keep a front page with the raw information.
What do you think?
reCAPTCHA Rendering Problem - Is it XP or Browsers?
When I was in elementary school (several decades before the internet) teachers would frequently
tell this unfunny joke.
Student - How do you spell dinosaur?
Teacher - Look it up in the dictionary.
Student - How can I look it up in the dictionary if I can't spell the word!
With reCAPTCHA, I feel like that student or a dog chasing its own tail. There are countless Google
listings about Mozilla based browsers failing to render the reCAPTCHA image. You see nothing or
a message about switching to a supported browser. Posting about this problem on browser specific
forums is not helpful. There seems to be a million possible causes and solutions.
reCAPTCHA is a Google product like their Chrome browser. I have MxNitro, which is a Chrome based
browser. It renders reCAPTCHA normally. If I could use a Chrome based browser all the time there
would be no problem.
Once or twice a week I use a version of Firefox called Light. It is the "real" Firefox, but it's a lightweight
version. I need the FlashGot add-on which fully integrates download managers into the "Save As" dialog
box. FlashGot is the solution when downloading from sites that use redirected links. A simple plug-in
listing your download manager in the browser Context Menu is useless with redirects.
The sites I was downloading from have adopted reCAPTCHA. I can longer use Firefox Light because it
will not render reCAPTCHA. FlashGot was created for Firefox. As far as I know, there is nothing similar
for Chrome based browsers.
Is XP the cause of this rendering problem with reCAPTCHA, or is there some browser edit or add-on
that would fix the problem with Mozilla based browsers?
Newest Adobe Flash and Shockwave, and Java, too!
What happened? FF blocs Flash...
Solution:
Flash 18.0.0.209 active-x and plugin (direct downloads)
Enjoy!
MCE 2005, WPA2 and SP3
Does MCE 2005 support WPA2 and wireless connections out of the box after installing drivers for WLAN (I have an Atheros AR9285)? Just wondering.
Also, is SP3 installable at all?
EDIT: There's 2 CDs. How do I put them on USB as one or should I simply install 2004?
Thanks

ThinkPad Can't Connect to School Interent
Hey guys. My ThinkPad T60 (with Intel 345ABG Wireless adapter) cannot connect to my schools internet.
It always gets stuck here:
It doesn't fail. It will sit there until the end times.
I know the wireless access points in question use WPA2. But I use WPA2 at home, so that's not the issue. If I boot into Windows 2000 and try to connect using boingo, it also fails. My iPhone SE and the laptop i used to bring (toshiba satellite c55-a) can both connect. I am assuming the 345ABG does not support wireless 'n' networks, could that be the issue? If it is, I know there is a compatible ABGN adapter I could buy to put in this laptop.
Any Ideas?
Thank you all!
P.S. If I 'borrow' an Ethernet cable from one of the school PCs and attach it to my ethernet port, it works that way. So the network is seeing me and not blocking me that way. But wireless is the problem
(FIXED) How to watch Amazon Prime Video on Windows XP
All
A while ago I discovered that Amazon Prime Video stopped working on Windows XP. Attempting to open it in Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox fails with "Unsupported Operating System."
Additionally, spoofing the browser as Firefox 53 or newer on XP will then tell you that Firefox is missing a DRM component.
However, today I discovered that Amazon Prime Video works perfectly in SeaMonkey on Windows XP. Using SeaMonkey forces Amazon to use Silverlight, and it works flawlessly!
This is very surprising to me since Silverlight has been mostly deprecated across the web. I'm surprised Amazon Prime Video is compatible with it.
To download Silverlight 5.1.50907 (the final release), you can download it from my FTP here: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/Silverlight5.1.50907.exe
To download Sea Monkey 2.49.4, you can download the full version on my FTP here: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/SeaMonkey Setup 2.49.4.exe
Problems moving from Outlook Express to Thunderbird on my XP machine
Well, today I started the process of moving 13 years of emails from my Outlook Express to Thunderbird ("TB"), all on my XP machine.
I installed Thunderbird on my XP machine and had it Import all settings, folders and emails from my Outlook Express. But then when I had TB start checking for new emails, it started downloading the same very old emails that are in the successful Import.
See my details at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1233978
Any thoughts? Thanks.
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile
Whenever I log in using my account, an error log appears "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile: Insufficient security rights or a corrupted local file. Windows has logged you in with a temporary profile any setting you make will not be saved." However, I manage to log in normally and I can do pretty much everything. I mean, I wouldn't even have noticed the "issue" if it wasn't for the error in the event log prompted by "usernv". Is this something I should be concerned about? Is it a false-positive? Is something corrupted?
WMP9 XP, finding metadata doesn't work
I don't really like the interface of WMP11, it looks out of place on an XP machine.
So I use WMP9 + KLite codec pack. But, finding album info is impossible since the URLs are dead that WMP9 uses, WMP11's work fine still, can anyone figure exactly what the original metadata URLs are, and maybe have a way of patching the exe or registry to use the current ones? I don't really like having to type in album info myself, and I like WMP9's UI so not upgrading to 11 anytime soon.
Thanks
